This week it goes to the anti smoking Nazis who now want the Government to ban smoking in cars.
Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) claims the pollution caused by one cigarette in a car is as bad as a pub filled with smoke.
Ermmm...what about the pollution caused by the car itself?
In its report, Beyond Smoking Kills, it states that stopping smoking in cars is "vital in cutting the exposure of children and young people to the toxins in second-hand tobacco smoke".
Ash's director Deborah Arnott said:
"It's a serious health issue. Research from Canada shows if you smoke once in a car you get the same pollution as you used to get at the end of an evening in a pub.
The level of exposure you get in an enclosed vehicle is extremely high and it's not at all good for your health."
The thin end of the wedge, they will ban it altogether.

Ok, smoking with kids in the car isn't the best of things to do for obvious health reasons and making sure they don't turn up at school smelling like they have an eighty a day habit (although many might have anyhow). However, if you are in a car on your own then it is only yourself you are exposing to second hand smoke and let's face it you have probably done the damage with the first hand smoke...unless of course you are in the habit of pulling up outside schools, winding the window down and breathing on passing kids (in which case you should probably seek psychiatric help).
ReplyDeleteOnce again, even as a non-smoker the stupidity of these people staggers me. In fact I am wondering if I can sue them as nowadays I am exposed to more second hand smoke than before as I have to pass several pubs on my way home, thus exposing myself (Oo-er! Matron!) to the clouds emanating from all the smokers standing outside.

ReplyDeleteI have said it before.....Nanny takes too much notice of single issue groups in this country.
I have never smoked and doubt if I ever will but, it seems to me that groups like ASH will not be happy until they have forced their will on to everyone......As I say, I don't smoke and to be honest I don't like the smell of smoke and smokers but, if you allow this group to have their way to ban a perfectly legal action then, what will be next on their list of things to ban? It is a slippery slope to a real police/Nanny state.
I would assume that most sensible parents and adults would not smoke in a car that has children in it, just as I would not travel in a car that had someone smoking in it.
Nanny needs to treat people as adults again and let them start to take responsibility for their own lives and actions.... otherwise, we will continue to turn into a nation of mindless irresponsible morons, and to be honest, we already have enough of them....Mostly in government, local authorities and organisations like ASH.
What poor concepts these ASH people come up with - missed opportunities by the sand bucket load.
ReplyDeleteHad they really been on the ball they would have considered banning driving or banning car ownership. That would not only have saved billions of children from a slow SHS death that might well have required more time to have any measurable effect than could be the span of their natural lives but also would have removed trillions of polluting planet destroyers from the roads and therefore even remove the need for the roads themselves.
That MISSED OPPORTUNITY should be the real reason for ASH's PoW award, not some mamby pamby piffle about prole sprogs being subject to SHS a few weeks before they take up full time nicotine addiction.

ReplyDeleteI think you are failing to consider that cigarette smoke will eventually escape from a car, even with the windows up, and disperse throughout the atmosphere, thus contributing to the carbon load and global warming. So you see, there is a rationale behind it all.
By the way, I have read that farting is similarly a major environmental problem soon to lead to the melting of the polar ice caps and the innundation of the world's major cities, so let me suggest a prohibition on farting in cars as well.

ASH and The Truth parted company many moons ago (probably around 1975 when 'research' into the dangers of passive smoking coincidentally followed an address to the WHO which suggested 'fostering the perception' that ETS damaged the health of others). Smokers have mildly accepted ASH's protestations that they just wanted smoking to be restricted to the upper deck of the bus; just wanted a non-smoking carriage on the train; just wanted no smoking in the theatre auditorium. In fact, ASH just want smoking to be prohibited and many smokers have now had enough of their lies and risible ETS 'research' (castigated by other epidemiologists worried about the discipline being called into disrepute). Smoking bans in some American states are being overturned as another of ASH's lies (that bans would be good for business)is exposed and bars suffer the loss in trade that we're now seeing here, and in Holland publicans have formed a coalition to defy the ban there which has seen the ludicrous prosecution of a cannabis user on the grounds that the joint that he was smoking included tobacco.
ReplyDeleteFor my part I now refuse to offer lifts in my car to intolerant friends who, while considering it acceptable to have me stand outside their house to smoke, are happy to use my car when they prefer not to drive, despite my insistence on smoking in it (your house, your rules; my car, my rules).
...and, I feel that I must point out that not all smokers are chavs who live on sink estates and who blow their benefits on fags.
I am so hacked off with the continual harassment and demonisation of smokers and when the proposed graphics (whose provenance I believe to be highly suspect) find their way on to packets, I'll be using a cigarette case.
I just hope that one day ASH's lies will be exposed.

SHS is a fraud, like millions I grew up in the 50s surrounded by cigarette smoke in cars, theatres, cinemas, restaurants, shops, public transport and other peoples homes. I encountered childhood allergies and asthma for the first time when one of my classmates at secondary school used an inhaler. It was regarded as so unusual that the poor soul was singled out and identified to all at a school assembly. I am pleased that non-smokers can have the choice to attend smoke free pubs and restaurants, I believe public transport is both cleaner and safer for being non-smoking, but the basis for the blanket smoking ban is a pack of lies. I see no reason why I cannot choose a smoking pub or have access to a smoking room in a restaurant. If you want to enhance the safety of children then don't have them in the bloody car in the first place, they are a dangerous distraction and an all round general menace. Next stop, ban smoking in the home and if you don't rebel against this idiocy at that point then all the smug anti-smokers who think this authoritarian shit is a good idea will deserve everything that follows.

The true Cancer of society is no less than ASH themselves.It was well known that the removal of smoking in pubs would increase smoking in the home.Where should kids be,if not in school ? On the streets or in the home.In order to reduce opposition to attempting to ban smoking in the home ASH ARE ATTEMPTING TO UTILISE THE NEXT STEP,STOPPING SMOKING IN CARS .SHS is an irritant to some non smokers,the TRUE scientific research strongly suggests it is harmless,unless several thousand cigarettes are smoked in a tiny,sealed room,perhaps the Gents in a small pub ? I'm ALL FOR CHOICE,but this is about covert abolition,HM GOVT won't want this,otherwise everyone's tax bill will rocket.Perhaps we would all benefit if ASH no longer received tax payers money,for them to promote tax payers paying the lost taxation from tobacco ? The names of 3 people who have died from SHS is still yet to be produced,it never will.

Damn, but I'm glad the local gov't in Ontario (errr, Canada) banned smoking in pubs (& everywhere else) and made me lose my 11 year career with a smoke filter company. Heck, I smoked going to the job -whilst driving-, I smoked in the pubs I went to, I smoked leaving the job -whilst driving-, I smoked in my office -breaking a long-standing law against smoking in the workplace-... Really, I think I should be dead now. Maybe I am and I just haven't noticed...
